Threads – an online collaboration, information and project management tool.

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

β€œThreads” It is designed to help organisations to keep track of tasks and issues when running projects or operations.

It can be also used as a content or knowledge management system to store and disseminate information within your organisation.

β€œThreads” is designed with none-technical users in mind. It is intuitive to use, and requires virtually no training at all.

The application is delivered over the web, meaning that there is no software to install, and you can access it from any internet-connected PC.

The reason we call this application β€œThreads” because it resembles a threaded discussion forum. However this application has some differences from a typical discussion forum and those differences make it so suitable and flexible for information management purpose.

Each thread has various properties that are used for classification purpose and for providing a basic work-flow.

Every thread also has per person access permissions and e-mail notification.

As I mentioned Threads can be used:

  • In project management as task and issue tracking tool
  • For storing and disseminating information (as document or knowledge management system)
  • For collaboration: internal discussions, announcements, and building a wiki-like content.

So let us have a look at the system in action…

Threads – an easy web-based project management system.

“Do not make me think!” exclaim leading usability experts.

How do we make a project management application simple and easy to learn?
Make it look & behave like something familiar, something you’ve used before.
That’s where idea of threads came from.

We call it threads because it resembles a threaded discussion forum. It just happens that a list of forums coincide with a list of project, and threads have some additional properties, so they can be worked with as tasks, project issues or elements of content.

There are a number of good Project Management software packages, open source, and hosted solutions. But most of projects that small businesses run do not need that a complex information management, that is why most of people resort to managing a project issue list in an excel document, which is bounced around and updated, tasks are sent and reported on via e-mail.

Threads is the next logical step from an Excel table with project issues.

New version of MyMovieList is on the server.

New version of My Movie List is on the server. The “friends” functionality was re-built and optimised for performance, and now profiles/movie lists of all users can be viewed (not only friends’ ones).

Next we want to make the site more engaging when users sign-up for the first time. Isn’t it a problem of many social networking websites? Registered - no friends yet… nothing to do. A solution to that problem comes inΒ the form of functionality that allows users to search for friends who are already on that particular network and toΒ notify those that are not. On many sites this is done semi-automatically by pulling a list of contacts from other websites (Googlemail, Yahoo, etc.) if their API allows to do that. Something we want to implement as well.

We also have to make some content public. This will show visitors what My Movie List is about and give some food to the search engine spiders.

What is My Movie List?

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

If our new web application were a movie…this would be the ‘pitch’. The ’sell’.

And we wouldn’t be web developers, no; we’d be the young, cocky scriptwriters, sure in the knowledge that we had the next box-office smash.

You? You’re the producer in the loud Hawaiian shirt drinking Margheritas, sunning yourself by the poolside (no offence, the shirt looks good on you). But - you’ve seen it all before and you need persuading. We get that.

Two sides of the same fence and…yet we’re not so different - you love the movies, we love the movies.

Meet the hero: an online service, which gives you an opportunity to set up lists of movies, arranged according to particular categories.

Is there a love interest, you ask? Why yes, yes there is - it’s the movies you love. Films you can watch time and time again. Films which you’re sure your friends would like - maybe they’re films you’ve watched together with your friends.

What’s the plot? The plot is simple, but engaging. We know you love movies and you want to share that love. But you want to find more movies that you’d love to watch - and this is where the plot develops.

You invite your friends (think of them as the supporting cast!), you recommend the films you know and love to them and they do the same for you. Pretty soon, you’re on a quest to see new films, to boldly go…sorry, we’re getting carried away.

But you get the idea - My Movie List is a place where you can share films and discover new ones.

And like your favourite director, you’re in control. You can add movies, create custom lists - anything you don’t like ends up on the cutting room floor!

Thanks for your time. See you on My Movie List!
